I remember learning literature and reading books in English classes, not how to form a proper sentence. Watch my rant on how no one ever taught us proper grammar growing up!

5th and 6th grade we had "language arts". thats the only time i remember grammar actually being drilled into my head. i guess the rest you just pick up via common sense and mimicking what you see in books, magazines, and corrected papers.
Brooke,
I completely agree! I actually TA'd a freshmen engineer class entitled "Technical Communications." So many of the students had terrible grammar -- and all blamed it on the fact that no one ever spent a significant amount of time showing them right from wrong.
I really think they should have a class on it in college. Just as some colleges require a "college writing" course, maybe a "language arts" should be required as well. It'd save professors, TAs, and students a LOT of frustration!
i can't say i remember the exact time i briefly learned it growing up, but YES--I agree. Non-English majors should also have a class on it. It's something we all should know and just don't. It's pretty sad!
